Special Olympics Australia + Victoria Police’s Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) are bringing you GREAT – an opportunity to share the Flame of Hope and promote the importance of inclusion and acceptance for people with an intellectual disability. They are hosting events across the Gippsland region that include a Torch Run through the main streets of local towns, with some Runs followed by a fun “Come and Try” sports event with programs delivered by local coaches and Special Olympics Australia athletes. Representatives from Victoria Police and Special Olympics Australia will be coming to you to help start building more opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities to play sport and feel connected in your local community.
This is a really big event for disability sport in regional Victoria, as part of the ongoing, fantastic partnership between Special Olympics Victoria and the Law Enforcement Torch. The GREAT tour will be visiting 9 regional centres, with a Come and Try Sports Event (delivered in partnership with GippSport) in 5 of the towns. All events will engage participants from local specialist schools and Disability Service Providers and see over 40 Police members from across Australia hop on a bus and share the Flame of Hope with regional communities, putting people with disability at the centre of the town.
This is the 3rd year in a row Special Olympics and LETR have partnered for this GREAT event, with previous trips through the Wimmera/Mallee and Goulbourn Valley regions. This year, Special Olympics Victoria is also taking 6 Athletes on the road in campervans, thank to a crowdfunding campaign and generous support from THL. It's exciting to be able to create the opportunity for leaders with the lived experience to role model what people can achieve.
For more information, people can keep track on the Special Olympics Facebook page or the LETR Victoria Facebook page. All community members are welcome to join us to support the Torch Runs and Come and Try Events. Join us and make GREAT an amazing opportunity for people with an intellectual disability across Gippsland.
